British life insurer Pru Life UK took part in the Next Generation of Teachers: 3rd Philippine Conference on ICT in Education and showcased “Cha-Ching” to about 250 policymakers, administrators, faculty, pre-service and in-service teachers of Philippine educational institutions. Pru Life UK Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Belle Tiongco introduced the Cha-Ching program as a tool to better educate Filipino children on smart money management.

Cha-Ching is a musical edutainment cartoon series that currently airs in seven Asian markets – Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. The first multi-country, multi-platform financial literacy for the youth initiative, Cha-Ching was developed in partnership with leading children’s channel Cartoon Network and internationally-renowned children’s education expert Dr. Alice Wilder.

The core of the Cha-Ching Financial Literacy for the Youth Program is a series of three-minute animated television musical episodes for children aged seven to 12 on Cartoon Network. Among its multi-touch points are an interactive website, mobile applications, parent activities and school contact programs.

The Philippines became the first country to integrate Cha-Ching in the grade school curriculum when the Department of Education (DepEd) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Pru Life UK in April to implement the Financial Literacy for the Youth Program in the 2012-2013 Grade II curriculum of two pilot schools. The Tagaytay Central School in the Southern Tagalog Region and Upper Bicutan Elementary School in the National Capital Region (NCR) will test the program for two years. The program is currently on its second quarter of implementation.

Held last October 23-25, 2012 at the Skylight Convention Center, Puerto Princesa, Palawan and organized by Knowledge Community, Inc., the conference aims to engage participants to further advance their knowledge on current developments in the effective use of information and communication technology (ICT) in education to help raise standards of education as embodied in the Philippine Education Reform Agenda.
