Being both in the Pacific Ring of Fire and the Typhoon Belt, the Philippines is exposed to a number of disasters and emergencies annually which require an increased level of awareness and vigilance in disaster and risk management and mitigation.

British life insurer Pru Life UK, under the auspices of the Prudence Foundation and in partnership with children’s development organization Plan International, recently conducted the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Youth Camp 2013 in Momarco Resort, Tanay, Rizal to contribute in equipping Filipinos to deal with the reality of climate change and the environment. Designed specifically for high school students, participants in the five-day DRR Youth Camp include more than 100 students from Marciana P. Catolos Memorial National High School, Tanay National High School and Tanay West National High School.

The DRR Youth Camp’s main objectives are to educate students on the basic concepts of disaster risk reduction and develop hazard maps per school. Participants were also given practical training on survival skills such as first aid, water safety and other preparedness training including camp management. The camp participants also formed Junior Emergency Response Teams to take an active part should an emergency arise in their respective schools.

Tanay, Rizal was one of the worst-hit towns during the onslaught of typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) in 2009. Typhoon Ondoy killed more than 80 people in Rizal, with floods and other destructions caused by 13.06 inches of rain in less than one day.

Participants were very enthusiastic with the learnings they acquired from the DRR Youth Camp. Juan Carlo Cruz, a third year high school student from Tanay West National High School shared, “It was a privilege for me to be given this kind of training. The campers and I were given vital information on reducing hazard and risk. We can help so many people with what we know and can do now.”

Angelo Estacio, a participant from Marciana P. Catolos Memorial National High School, adds, “I became more aware of our environment and why things like super typhoons happen. The knowledge that I received from the youth camp can be my armor when disaster comes, and I can also help others in need.”

Prudence Foundation and Plan International will likewise roll out the DRR program in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. The Youth Camp is aligned with Prudence Foundation’s mission of providing long-term protection to Filipino families through disaster preparedness and relief initiatives.
