Charity has a new beat: Arnel Pineda teams up with Prudence Foundation, Pru Life UK for Typhoon Yolanda rehabilitation efforts

Giving help and donating has never sounded this good.

British life insurer Pru Life UK and Prudence Foundation, the regional charitable arm of Prudential Corporation Asia (PCA), launched the new version of Cha-Ching's ‘donate’ anthem, Charity. The song is performed by Filipino singer and American rock band Journey frontman Arnel Pineda and arranged by veteran television director and musician Bert de Leon.

The Charity song is part of the original lineup of animated Cha-Ching music videos that aims to teach children aged seven to 12 four fundamental money smart values – earn, save, spend and donate. The Charity song highlights the choice to donate and share what we have, either in the form of money, time or basic goods, to those who strive with less in life. Pineda recorded a cover of the original song showcasing his signature soaring rock vocals. Anna Jomeo of the Mulatto band provided the singing voice of Charity, one of the Cha-Ching band members.

Pineda shared, “I am honored to partner with Prudence Foundation for this meaningful initiative. We all need to be reminded of our social obligation to share to those who have less than we do. ” He added, “I am glad to play a part and hope everybody will download the song to support this worthy cause.”

Pineda’s version of the Charity song, a power ballad, is featured in a three-minute music video with all new animation sequences featuring the global relief efforts following the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan). The cartoon episode aims to introduce children to real-life situations in which the money-smart value of donating may be practiced. Pineda also appears in the new episode as an animated character.

Starting today, the Cha-Ching Charity music video featuring Pineda can be viewed on Cha Ching's interactive website (www.cha-ching.com) and YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/ChaChingVideos). The new Charity Song and the Cha-Ching Album featuring all songs from the 16 music videos are now available for purchase from iTunes Store. Proceeds of the song and album downloads will go to the Prudence Foundation's Yolanda relief effort.

Cartoon Network will start airing the new Cha-Ching Charity episode featuring Pineda on Saturday, April 12, 2014 across Asia. It will also air on Channel V for one month.

Pineda became the lead singer of Journey in 2007. He has his own charitable organization, the Arnel Pineda Foundation Inc. (APFI) and recently recorded the single “Listen With Your Heart” with other famed Filipino music artists as a tribute to the victims of Yolanda and a gesture of thanks for the aid extended by over 50 countries in the aftermath of the natural disaster. Together with Journey, he has also helped give over 2 Million Meals to the United Nations’ World Food Programme.

Jomeo has been performing with Mulatto since August 2010. De Leon has directed numerous TV shows, including the long running noontime variety show Eat Bulaga and sitcom Pepito Manaloto. He is also a respected talent manager in the entertainment industry.

The co-creator of Cha-Ching, PCA Regional Director Sean Rach, said the choice to collaborate with Pineda on this new Charity duet was a natural one. “We are Arnel and Journey fans. With his personal and the band's commitments to help following Typhoon Yolanda, we knew that we shared the aspiration to give back to those in need. Arnel is an amazing person and his commitment to giving back to the community is truly inspirational. His voice is incredible and we are very honored that he agreed to donate his time and talent.” He added, “Anna sings Charity with an impressive range and complements Arnel’s performance. Mr. De Leon's vision and arrangement of ‘Charity’ as a power ballad adds great energy to the song. This will delight Cha-Ching fans.”

Strengthening the pillars – children, education and disaster preparedness and relief

Prudence Foundation Executive Director Marc Fancy highlighted, “What we are trying to achieve with the new Charity song and animated music video is a culmination of Prudence Foundation’s three main areas of focus – children, education and disaster preparedness and relief. ‘Charity’ is originally featured in the Cha-Ching series, meant to educate kids about the value of donating. What we do in our disaster preparedness and relief programs is encapsulated in the song – we help people in need make a fresh start. This project hopes to broaden the awareness on pressing issues that we need to respond to and involves even the youngest members of our society in the movement to affect positive change in our communities.”

The Prudence Foundation was established by PCA in 2011 to consolidate its long-term commitment to serve the Asian communities in which it does business.

PCA launched the landmark animated musical edutainment program Cha-Ching in partnership with leading children’s channel Cartoon Network and children’s education specialist Dr. Alice Wilder in 2011. It is the first multi-country, multi-platform programme that aims to teach kids about smart money management so they can grow up to become financially literate adults.

The Philippines became the first country to integrate Cha-Ching in the grade school curriculum following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Education (DepEd) in April 2012. Pru Life UK is also set to sign with an additional five schools and one learning center, resulting in a total of 40 Cha-Ching public and private partner schools nationwide.

‘We walk our talk’

Antonio De Rosas, President and CEO of Pru Life UK and Trustee of Prudence Foundation reiterated the depth of commitment the group has made in carrying out its mission to serve Asian communities, most recently demonstrated in the Philippines. “We walk our talk. Part of our Company culture is the commitment to support nation building not just through our business of providing financial protection for the future, but in empowering communities to build better lives.”

After Yolanda devastated Central Philippines in November 2013, Prudence Foundation mobilised resources and pledged US$2 million to support the immediate relief and long-term recovery effort in the affected areas.

Fancy shared, “We had our Regional PruVolunteer Programme in Santa Fe, Bantayan Island, Cebu two weeks ago where over 100 employee-volunteers from sister companies across 12 countries, including the United Kingdom, participated in building disaster-resilient homes for displaced families. We are funding 135 new homes and supporting the sustainable livelihood of the local community with 183 motorized boats with fishnets and 140 pedicabs. It is our hope to have a meaningful contribution in the development of Asian communities.”

Among the participants in the Regional PruVolunteer Programme in Bantayan Island, Cebu were the Philippine National Football Team, more popularly known as the Azkals, and their coaches. Head Coach Thomas Dooley said, “Something like this is really necessary to uplift the people of Bantayan, especially after what they’ve experienced.” Azkals player Phil Younghusband added, “It was so inspiring to be a part of it, seeing people take the time out to be in Cebu and build houses for those who were left homeless by Yolanda. They have support through difficult times.”
