In its effort to develop and promote disaster preparedness in the Philippines, British life insurer Pru Life UK supported a series of activities in observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month with its groundbreaking Safe Steps programme. Activities included the launch of the award-winning disaster preparedness mobile application iLigtas for the Mozilla Firefox operating system (OS) and a disaster preparedness learning session for key stakeholders in Barangay Catmon, Malabon.

Safe Steps is a long-term disaster preparedness educational programme with multiple platforms covering on-air videos, an informative website and educational collateral that can be shared through community-based activities. Core to the programme is a series of 60-second educational videos featuring Safe Steps Ambassador Manny Pacquiao who advises on key survival steps that individuals and households should take when disasters strike. The Safe Steps public service announcements were developed in partnership with Prudence Foundation, the unified charitable arm of Pru Life UK regional headquarters Prudential Corporation Asia, and the National Geographic Channel.

Launched in early 2014, iLigtas is a cross-platform mobile application that aims to serve as a risk reduction management tool for local government units (LGUs) and non-government organizations (NGOs). iLigtas provides awareness on impending disasters through various means of crowdsourcing and translates the information collected into infographics for LGUs and NGOs. Previously available only on the Android OS platform, the app is now available on the Mozilla Firefox OS and includes the digital version of the Safe Steps infographic handout cards. The Safe Steps info cards guide users on what to do before, during and after disasters. In addition to the integration of Safe Steps in iLigtas, Safe Steps kits were turned over to Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino for distribution to their 17 barangays. The kits include Safe Steps videos and hard copies of the info cards and posters.

Also as part of observing the National Disaster Consciousness Month, Safe Steps was integrated to the learning session for barangay officials and homeowners’ association (HoA) representatives of Barangay Catmon in Malabon City in collaboration with the Corporate Network for Disaster Response (CNDR). Barangay Catmon is a key area in CNDR’s Noah’s Ark Project, a community-based initiative to improve the capability of high-risk barangays and sitios to respond with natural disasters, particularly floods. More than one hundred participants attended the session on disaster preparedness. After the comprehensive lesson, Safe Steps kits were distributed to the HoA representatives and Catmon Integrated School.
