Philippine football in the grassroots level gets a boost from Pru Life UK as the British life insurance company co-sponsors “Football for a Better Life 2015,” which kicks off in Barotac, Nuevo, Iloilo on March 7, 2015. This program is spearheaded by Chieffy Caligdong, former member of the Philippine Azkals and current player for the Green Archers United.

Caligdong – together with Chris Thomas, Football for a Better Life Grassroots Development Director – will be conducting a series of free football clinics and tournaments in 10 key areas throughout the country from March to November 2015. Thousands of boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 14 from different football clubs across the nation are expected to attend.

“Pru Life UK is committed to supporting football in the Philippines because we believe in helping the education of the Filipino youth,” said Belle Tiongco, Chief Marketing Officer of Pru Life UK. “Sports training develops discipline and enhances a person's physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being. We believe that our boys and girls can discover their potential by undergoing football training. We support this grassroots program to train and develop the best football players that the Philippines can be proud of.”

The assistance of Thomas – a top caliber United Kingdom-based coach who has trained several football teams from the UK, United States, and Thailand – will enhance the benefits of the program for the participants.

A product of a grassroots football program himself, Caligdong  emphasized the need for early football training. “Mas madaling turuan ang mga bata. Habang bata pa sila mas gagaling sila dahil mas marami silang makukuhang exposure by playing against other football teams (It is easier to teach kids. They will have more opportunities to improve because they will get more exposure by playing against other football teams),” he said. He participated in Kasibulan, a flagship project of the Philippine Football Federation that gives football training to teachers and elementary and high school students, when he was an eight-year-old grade 2 student living in rural Iloilo.

Caligdong began teaching football to kids when he was an enlisted member of the Air Force and even during his stint with the Philippine Azkals through Globe Telecom’s “Football Para Sa Bayan” program. Through these initiatives, he expects to discover future Azkals, particularly young talents whom he can recommend for football scholarships in big colleges and universities. “Gusto kong i-encourage at i-motivate ang mga bata. Gusto kong ipakita sa kanila na puwede silang magkaroon ng magandang kinabukasan sa pamamagitan ng football (I want to encourage and motivate the kids. I want to show them that they can have a better future through football,” he explained.

After Barotac in Iloilo on March 7-8, 2015, “Football for a Better Life 2015” will go to Pampanga, Negros Occidental, Capiz City, Dumaguete City, Baguio City, Palawan, Davao del Norte, Legazpi City, and the National Capital Region.

“Football for a Better Life 2015” is also sponsored by Globe Telecom and Gawad Kalinga SipaG Program.
