3 June 2015, Manila – British life insurer Pru Life UK, the official accident insurance provider of the Philippine national men’s football team, held a send-off for the team at the Century Park Hotel in Manila. More popularly known as the Azkals, the team is set to claim a spot for Filipinos in the world football arena in the 2018 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in Russia.

The Azkals start their journey of pursuing the country’s World Cup dreams on June 11 at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, where they will face Bahrain, currently at 108th in the FIFA world ranking, higher than the Philippines at 137th. This is the team’s first game in a series of eight in the first round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. The team will also have to compete with and win against Uzbekistan, South Korea, and Yemen in a home-and-away round robin format to be able to advance to the next round.

“We continue to support Team Azkals as they defend our country’s position in football in the upcoming qualifiers,” said Pru Life UK Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Belle Tiongco. “They are a source of pride and honor to our country, and together with the entire country, we will be behind the Azkals until they compete at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.”

“Pru Life UK is committed to supporting grassroots development in football in the Philippines because we believe in its capacity to empower Filipinos through opening opportunities in the field of sports and advocating the holistic development of the youth,” she added.

Pru Life UK began a partnership with the Azkals in 2014 by sponsoring the team’s training in the United Kingdom for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup, as well as the showing of its TV documentary “World Cup Dreams”. This year, the partnership has been strengthened through the program Football for a Better Life, a series of free football clinics and tournaments in 10 key areas nationwide to promote football in the grassroots level. Football for a Better Life runs from March to November 2015, with its remaining legs to be conducted in the following months in Dumaguete City, Naga City, Palawan, Tagum City, Baguio City and Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.
