In their continuing advocacy to instill financial literacy among children, British life insurer Pru Life UK and Bulacan’s top learning institution Baliuag University (BU) recently signed a memorandum of agreement under the Company’s Cha-Ching Financial Literacy for the Youth Program. BU joins Pru Life UK’s roster of 67 public and private partner schools that are currently implementing the program through the integration of Cha-Ching’s money-smart values – earn, save, spend and donate – in the grade school curriculum.

“The education landscape is changing, and our university seeks different avenues to inject 21st-century competencies in our curriculum. We are very fortunate to have partnered with Pru Life UK to teach financial literacy among our students through Cha-Ching. We are positive that this will be a very productive and meaningful collaboration,” said BU President Dr. Patricia Bustos-Lagunda, who also expressed her excitement about the university’s centennial celebration happening in the next 10 years.

Pru Life UK Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Belle Tiongco likewise emphasized the program’s mission to inculcate basic money management skills among children. “Children need to learn how to efficiently handle money; this is the value of Cha-Ching. Cha-Ching is now on its fourth year, and while we take pride that the Philippines is the first to integrate the program in the school curriculum across Asia, we are also very proud that we have partnered with the best schools in the country. As Cha-Ching keeps growing, rest assured that we will continue to share with you our programs and learnings. Here’s to a brighter future for us, our children and our country,” she said.

Apart from the full program support from Pru Life UK, which includes all program materials such as Cha-Ching videos, workbooks and school supplies, the teachers from the grade school department of BU also participated in comprehensive sessions on financial literacy to aid them in the integration of the Cha-Ching lessons in their curriculum.

Pru Life UK’s flagship corporate social responsibility program, Cha-Ching is the first multi-country, multi-platform program that aims to help parents in Asia teach financial literacy to children aged seven to 12. It was launched in Hong Kong in 2011 by Prudential Corporation Asia, the regional headquarters of Pru Life UK.

The Philippines became the first country to integrate Cha-Ching in the grade school curriculum following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Education (DepEd) in April 2012 for the integration of the Cha-Ching in the grade school curriculum. Piloting in Upper Bicutan Elementary School in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Tagaytay Central School in the Southern Tagalog Region for academic year 2012-2013 through DepEd’s Adopt-A-School program, the implementation has expanded its coverage to a total of 39 public schools in NCR, Northern and Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao for academic year 2015-2016. Cha-Ching is likewise concurrently being integrated in the syllabi of 28 partner private educational institutions.
