As Pru Life UK also marks its 30th year, Gocuan sees the future anchored in people, innovation and adaptability.
CEBU, Philippines — Thirty years into his journey with Pru Life UK, veteran insurance leader Henry Gocuan continues to champion one mission—providing the best protection to Filipino families by developing professional advisors who cultivate a deeper understanding of the value of protection.
Reflecting on his decades-long career, Gocuan looks back on his early assignment to develop the Cebu market, when life insurance was still unfamiliar to many Filipinos. Building acceptance meant overcoming skepticism, limited awareness and the challenge of introducing a product people could not immediately see or feel.
“It was very daunting,” said Gocuan. “Not many people were open to life insurance, and they didn’t know the brand. So, I took the challenge because I want to develop professional agents that can educate the public more about the value of life insurance."
Henry Gocuan delivers a speech during the launch of Pru Life UK Cebu held at Cebu Plaza Hotel on April 25, 1997, marking a milestone in the expansion of Pru Life UK in the Visayas region.
From those early days of groundwork in Cebu, the company steadily gained public trust through training, persistence and strong field activity. For Gocuan, the milestone of 30 years is not just about longevity—it represents a transformation in how Filipinos view financial protection.
Having witnessed the industry’s evolution firsthand, Gocuan points to one defining realization: protection only becomes meaningful when communicated clearly by trusted individuals.
In the past, he said, many agents lacked the training needed to effectively explain life insurance. Over time, professional development changed that landscape. Well-trained advisors became more confident communicators, more persistent and more capable of helping families understand both risk and responsibility.
That focus on training became the foundation of his leadership. He prioritized mentorship, continuous training and the cultivation of professionalism among advisors. For him, success is measured by how effectively agents serve families—not simply by sales outcomes.

In Cebu’s relationship-driven culture, trust remains the most valuable currency. Gocuan emphasizes that advisors must connect with clients on a personal level, listen carefully to their concerns, and offer solutions grounded in integrity.
“Agents should be able to connect with our clients and understand their problems so they can be effective in helping them solve their problems," he explains, emphasizing that this philosophy has shaped how teams communicate financial responsibility today.
“It’s very important that the agent will have integrity so that the clients can trust them and trust whatever they have promised to the clients,” he added.
Over three decades, the role of insurance advisors has evolved alongside technology and market expectations. Gocuan underscores the importance of staying updated both in knowledge and tools to remain relevant to modern families.
Continuous upgrading, he says, is essential not only for credibility but also for service quality. Leaders must develop new leaders who will guide future generations of advisors, ensuring that professionalism remains at the heart of the industry.
As operations expanded, Gocuan maintained a hands-on philosophy: remain present in the field and attentive to client needs. Listening to families allows organizations to adapt products and services that remain responsive to changing realities.
This approach has helped shape a strong agency culture, one that values understanding as much as expertise.
Henry Gocuan, together with Jimmy Barba—both of whom pioneered Pru Life UK in Cebu—receives recognition at the inaugural annual awarding ceremony, celebrating their leadership and the team’s outstanding performance and shared achievements.
As Pru Life UK also marks its 30th year, Gocuan sees the future anchored in people, innovation and adaptability. He believes the company, which he describes as a leading and innovative force in the country, must continue developing capable leaders, embracing evolving technology and refining solutions to continue providing meaningful protection to families across generations.
His message to advisors is clear: “Always be up there in the field and try to listen to the needs of our clients so that we can develop products that fit their needs all the time.” To Filipino families who have trusted Pru Life UK over the years, his message is equally direct: protecting loved ones is both a responsibility and an act of care.
For Gocuan, life insurance represents more than financial planning. It is a commitment to ensure that when life becomes uncertain, families are supported when they need it most.
