British life insurer Pru Life UK advocated responsible and safe cycling once again through PRUride PH 2018 held on January 11 to 14 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Bataan.
The first leg of the two-weekend cycling festivities gathered more than a thousand amateur and seasoned cyclists, including the strongest and most competitive athletes in the country.
Jan Paul Morales and Jermyn Prado now hold the title of National Champions of Men and Women Elite, respectively, after dominating the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)-accredited (class B) PRUride Professional Road Race. The event was co-organized by Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines – the national governing body for cycling in the Philippines and the only cycling organization recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, and UCI.
24-year-old Prado bested her competitors, including two-time Asian Mountain Bike Champion Ariana Dormitorio and Taiwanese triathlon athlete Chang Ting-Ting, in a 98-kilometer route. “It was a very challenging race because of the strong winds and my even-stronger competitors, but I’m happy I won.” she said.
Morales and Prado each won PhP 50,000 in cash and will officially represent the country in the 2018 Prudential RideLondon. They will be joined by Pampanga-based Bertrand Telitxky, the first raffle winner of an all-expense-paid trip to London.
A family cycling affair
Aside from the competitive races Professional Road Race and Individual Time Trials, PRUride PH 2018 also became a family affair as cycling enthusiasts across all ages and expertise flocked to Subic.
Nine-year-old Peter Rance Jr., the youngest rider and 50-kilometer Gran Fondo finisher, was joined by his dad and siblings around the scenic Bataan route, while 70-year-old cycling enthusiast Cesar Abasolo nailed the 100-kilometer ride.
Attendees also dropped by the PRUride Bike Expo at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center where different brands and organizations showcased their products and services, including National Bicycle Organization which hosted free bike lessons with cone courses.
Likewise, aside from the limited-edition PRUride PH 2018 jersey and finisher’s medal, exciting prizes such as bluetooth speakers, no-spill tumblers, and bike accessories, among others, were raffled off to registrants throughout the four-day weekend.
