Pru Life UK, MMDA continue stronger ties as SAFE STEPS Road Safety partners for fifth straight year

Free accident protection renewed for over 8,000 frontline workers of government agency

Leading life insurer Pru Life UK and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) remain as staunch allies to make the roads safer and better for Filipinos as they recently renewed the SAFE STEPS Road Safety partnership for the fifth straight year.

Under the agreement, Pru Life UK will continue providing free Group Personal Accident (PA) insurance coverage with accidental death and disablement benefit and burial assistance to about 8,000 MMDA employees. From 2017 to 2021, there have been 66 beneficiaries of the government agency’s insured employees who received assistance from Pru Life UK under this partnership.

“Pru Life UK strongly advocates for safer roads for Filipino motorists, commuters, and pedestrians. We believe that promoting SAFE STEPS Road Safety with our continued partnership with the MMDA will have a significant impact to that cause,” says Pru Life UK President and CEO Eng Teng Wong. “Additionally, we also want to help Filipinos be equipped with easy-to-understand yet proper knowledge on Covid-19 prevention by welcoming the SAFE STEPS Covid-19 track to our agreement,” he added.

The tie-up which started in 2017 aims to promote the well-being of MMDA employees as well as Filipino motorists and pedestrians by promoting the SAFE STEPS Road Safety program. The educational and awareness materials geared towards responsible driving and road usage was created by Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential in Asia and Africa. These are deployed through MMDA’s communication platforms including its LED gantries along EDSA, steep pylons in all key Metro Manila roads, including their website and social media channels.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes expressed his utmost gratitude to Pru Life UK for extending its commitment in providing accidental death and disablement benefit as well as burial assistance to all the agency’s personnel, regardless of their employment status.

“We thank Pru Life UK for granting our employees - permanent, casual and job personnel - free Group Personal Accident (PA) insurance coverage for the fifth consecutive year with premiums fully waived for one year. This would be of great help to our employees’ financial security in the event of an accident while performing their duties. Their loved ones would not suffer financially because of the guaranteed cash benefit,” Artes stressed.

Developed by Prudence Foundation, in collaboration with National Geographic Channel and Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), SAFE STEPS Road Safety is the first of its kind Pan-Asian public service initiative with the goal of raising awareness about road safety being one of the leading causes of death across the globe and protecting as many lives as possible.

Pru Life UK and MMDA are also welcoming the addition of the SAFE STEPS Covid-19 prevention track to their tie-up. Created in 2020, the latest public service announcements aim to educate Filipinos through easy-to-understand educational messages to encourage simple preventative measures that help minimize the chances of transmission of the virus.

In April 2020, Pru Life UK launched its Personal Accident coverage with Covid-19 insurance with the aim of providing free protection to 1 million Filipinos at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The free accident with Covid-19 cover was made available through Pulse, Pru Life UK’s health and wealth app, and among the early beneficiaries of the free insurance were MMDA employees.
