Fifteen-year-old multi-gold medalist badminton netter John Edgard Reyes will soon set foot in London to join 10 other Filipino young athletes to not only watch the 2012 London Olympics, but also attend the London Summer School Sports Program, a dream for most athletes his age.

The two-week sports program, which will run from July 29 to August 12, is an initiative of the Philippine Olympic Committee and the British Council. It will be held at St. Bede’s International School in the United Kingdom.

“This is a dream come true for me. Only 11 Filipino athletes will be able to participate and I am one of them. This is a big opportunity. I am most excited about watching the Olympics, as I will be able to learn more and be inspired to do better as an athlete so that one day I can be an Olympian, too,” said Reyes, who started competing four years ago, at 11.

British life insurer Pru Life UK has joined the two organizations in supporting Reyes’ participation to the summer camp, as part of its advocacy to support youth development. Pru Life UK provided Reyes pocket money to help defray expenses, and a badminton racket.

“We hope this experience will motivate Joed to continue to excel in his field through discipline and hard work, and to aspire for greater achievements. Investing in our youth is one way of helping secure the next generation’s future,” said Pru Life UK President and Chief Executive Officer Antonio De Rosas.

Joed to friends and family, Reyes is currently a senior student at Marcelo H. del Pilar National High School in Malolos, Bulacan. What started out as a hobby that he took up to bond with friends became an opportunity for him to discover his exceptional capabilities in the sport. He has won the top plum in badminton tournaments of various sporting events for young athletes like the Palarong Pambansa, Batang Pinoy, Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association Meet and Duelo, The Battle for Badminton Supremacy. Reyes works hard, by training with the MSI Juniors under Coach Rafael Dionisio four times a week for three hours each day. “I focus on the things that I have to do so that I will do well when I get to London. We are diligent in our training so that we’ll also be able to achieve what other athletes have achieved.”
