Pru Life UK donates Php 8 million to Philippine General Hospital

Funds to aid in purchasing medical supplies for COVID-19 response

Pru Life UK, through Prudence Foundation, Prudential’s community investment arm in Asia and Africa, has contributed Php 8 million from its Prudential COVID-19 relief fund to the Philippine General Hospital Medical Foundation Inc. (PGHMFI).

The funds will support the University of the Philippines (UP)-PGH Bayanihan Na’s COVID-19 project to provide quality medical-grade equipment and supplies such as ventilators, unit oxygen concentrators, infusion, and syringe pumps for PGH and equip its healthcare workers who are deployed to assist COVID-19 patients.

“With a total budget of USD 2 million (Php 104 million), the COVID-19 Relief Fund has been set-up and distributed among Prudential’s markets around the world to support charitable and community projects tackling the immediate impact of the pandemic and its social and economic consequences. In the Philippines, our dedication continues to help sustain the operations of the PGH and cater to the needs of the patients amid the COVID-19 outbreak” shares Prudence Foundation Executive Director Marc Fancy.

“We are grateful to Pru Life UK and Prudence Foundation for their continued support in helping us provide the healthcare needs of thousands of our patients with the battle against COVID-19. This would significantly strengthen our pandemic response and help save more lives,” says UP-PGH Director Gerardo Legaspi, MD.

PGH currently serves as one of the primary COVID-19 referral hospitals in the Philippines. Being the biggest modern government tertiary hospital in the country and the only national referral center for tertiary care, PGH has a healthcare force of 4,000 staff servicing approximately 600,000 patients, mostly indigent Filipinos, annually.

In July 2020, Pru Life UK donated Php 5 million to PGHMFI as part of the Prudential COVID-19 relief fund in the previous year. In August 2021, PGH received a total of Php 763,000 through the PGHMFI with amounts coming from employee donations. This was used to help in the recovery of its surgical operations after a fire broke damaging its hospital facilities and supplies.

This program is part of Pru Life UK’s Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals of reaching out and providing better opportunities for the underserved among Prudential’s communities and the volunteering efforts of its people in Asia, the US, and Africa.
